A better world through a better Internet...really?
InternetNZ's new vision was published today (posted here). It left me totally flabbergasted and completely cold, to the point that I wondered whether the people responsible for it actually understand their own business. The "vision" is about as inspirational as "a better world through better roads", or better telecommunications or better power distribution for that matter.
Or have I missed something?
- Providers of Internet networks need to realise that their role is the same as other utility provider. The man in the street wants a reliable "dial tone", that's all. He wants to be able to connect and do stuff, without worrying about the network that supports it all.
- A better Internet (roads, power, telecommunications) doesn't make for a better world. A better utility simply makes for a more connected world. A better world emerges from morals, culture, ethics and other social phenomena.
Or have I missed something?
You're right. It's just a belch of words. Maybe if they used the 8 strategy framework of The Alpha Strategies as the means to capture each of the strategies they are currently implementing, then they would be better able to understand what dominant strategy is for them. I can't tell if it's Service Delivery or Technology. But I do know from all the companies we have worked with that vision comes from the pursuit of dominant strategy.
But that's why I wrote The Alpha Strategies. I wanted to offer a means to make things better. And we know from our competitive research that strategy is far more than marketing or a value proposition. It is a dynamic system.
